Connecting a DJI camera with Moblin

Stream your DJI Osmo Pocket 3 or Osmo Action wirelessly through Moblin and FizzyPeak — including iPhone hotspot and RTMP ingest.

Connecting a DJI camera with Moblin

Moblin is one of the best iOS apps for IRL streaming and works perfectly with FizzyPeak. If you want to get your DJI Pocket 3, Osmo Action 4 or Osmo Action 5 into your stream picture wirelessly, this guide shows you the complete path — from the iPhone hotspot to a live scene switch.

What you need

  • iPhone with Moblin (App Store)
  • DJI camera (Pocket 3, Osmo Action 4/5 or compatible)
  • An active FizzyPeak subscription with Cloud-OBS
  • Personal hotspot enabled on the iPhone

1. Set up the iPhone hotspot

On your iPhone, open Settings → Personal Hotspot and enable "Allow Others to Join". Note down the Wi-Fi password — you'll need it shortly for the camera.

Tip: Enable "Maximize Compatibility" if your DJI won't connect. Then the hotspot broadcasts on 2.4 GHz instead of 5 GHz.

2. Create an RTMP ingest in Moblin

In Moblin, go to Settings → Ingests and choose RTMP Server.

  1. Tap Create
  2. Name: e.g. DJI
  3. Latency: 4000 ms (stable default — for picture-in-picture, lower it later, see "Keeping two cameras in sync while moving")
  4. Switch the RTMP server to Enabled

Moblin now shows you an RTMP URL in the format rtmp://<your-ip>:1935/camera/DJI. We'll need that in the next step.

3. Create a new scene in Moblin

  1. Settings → Scenes → New Scene
  2. Name e.g. DJI Pocket
  3. Delete the default video source "Screen Capture"
  4. Add the RTMP stream from step 2 as a video source

4. Connect the DJI camera

Turn your DJI on and go to Settings → DJI Devices → Add Device in Moblin. Moblin automatically searches for your camera.

Configuration in the app:

  • WiFi SSID: the name of your iPhone hotspot (exactly as displayed)
  • WiFi Password: the password from step 1
  • RTMP Type: Server
  • RTMP Stream: the entry created in step 2 (DJI)
Important: capitalization of the Wi-Fi name must match exactly, otherwise the camera won't connect.

5. Go live — all inside Moblin (you do NOT need the DJI app)

You do this entirely inside Moblin, not in the DJI app (Mimo): go back to Settings → DJI Devices (where you added the camera in step 4). Enable "Auto-restart live stream when broken" (handles connection drops automatically) and start the live stream from that same screen.

Moblin controls your Osmo Action 4 over Bluetooth and starts the broadcast; on the camera, "Preparing to livestream…" briefly appears, then "Live". The video is carried by the camera over Wi-Fi (your iPhone hotspot) via RTMP into Moblin — Bluetooth alone isn't enough for the picture. Moblin then forwards the finished stream via SRTLA to your FizzyPeak ingest.

Don't see your OA4 in the list? Turn the camera on, scroll up in Settings → DJI Devices — it will then appear for selection.

6. Quick button for fast access

So you can quickly turn the DJI on or off during the stream, enable the DJI Devices entry under Settings → Display → Quick Buttons. That gives you a direct button in the main view.

Want your iPhone and your Osmo Action 4 on screen at once — full frame plus a small window? Moblin can do this itself, no Cloud-OBS required. Moblin composes the picture-in-picture using a video source widget.

Requirement: Your DJI is already set up as a video source in Moblin — i.e. steps 1–5 above are done (Bluetooth control + Wi-Fi hotspot/RTMP), so its picture comes in via the RTMP ingest.

  1. Open Settings → Scenes and pick the scene where your iPhone camera is the main source (or create a new one).
  2. Go to Settings → Widgets → Create and choose the Video source type — this is Moblin's multi-cam widget.
  3. Assign your DJI as the widget's source (the RTMP ingest from step 2 above, which your Osmo Action 4 feeds into).
  4. Back in your scene: add the video source widget to the scene and drag/resize it to the size and corner you want — that's your picture-in-picture.
  5. Done: your iPhone camera runs full-frame in the background, the Osmo Action 4 sits on top as a small window. The finished composite is sent to FizzyPeak as a single stream.
Tip: Create two scenes — e.g. "iPhone large + DJI small" and "DJI large + iPhone small" — and switch between layouts live during the stream via scene switching (or a Quick Button).

Keeping two cameras in sync while moving (e.g. cycling)

As soon as you move fast, you'll notice it: your iPhone camera runs in real time, while the DJI comes in slightly delayed over Wi-Fi + RTMP — an offset between the two pictures. You can't get this to zero — Moblin can't artificially delay either camera (there's no video-sync feature, only audio sync). But you can reduce the offset a lot:

  1. Lower the DJI latency (main lever): In Moblin's RTMP ingest (Settings → Streams, your "DJI" entry), turn the Latency down from the 4000 ms stability default to the lowest stutter-free value — often ~500 ms on a stable 2.4 GHz hotspot. If it gets too low, the DJI stutters on Wi-Fi fluctuations → nudge it back up.
  2. Save extra latency on the DJI: a lower bitrate and, if needed, 720p instead of 1080p reduce the DJI's delay further (trade-off: slightly less sharpness). Keyframe interval 2 s.
  3. Choose the layout wisely: DJI large (full frame), iPhone small as PiP — in a small window the remaining offset is barely noticeable. Both large side by side makes it stand out the most.
  4. If sync is critical: switch instead of showing both. Rather than picture-in-picture, switch between iPhone and DJI via scene switching (or a Quick Button) — then only one camera is on screen and there's zero visible offset. Often the cleanest choice for fast sections.
Truly perfect sync is only possible with two iPhone lenses (front + back at once) — both run internally without offset. As soon as an external camera comes in over RTMP, a small remainder stays for physical reasons.

Important to understand: Bluetooth controls, Wi-Fi carries the picture

A common misconception: the Bluetooth connection between Moblin and the Osmo Action 4 does not replace the Wi-Fi hotspot. Both work together:

  • Bluetooth = Moblin controls the camera (pairing, starting/stopping the live stream, auto-restart) — tested with OA4, OA3 and Osmo Pocket 3.
  • Wi-Fi hotspot + RTMP = the actual video transport from the camera to Moblin.

So you always need both: the iPhone hotspot from step 1 (for the picture) and the Bluetooth-paired camera from steps 4/5 (for control). You do not need a DJI app (Mimo) — Moblin handles pairing, configuration and start entirely by itself.

Note: Keep the camera within Bluetooth range (about 10 m) and charge it via cable while streaming — the continuous live stream drains the battery quickly.

FizzyPeak integration

As soon as Moblin is streaming, the feed appears in your Cloud-OBS under the scene you set up for Moblin. Using the Scene Editor in the FizzyPeak dashboard, you can place the DJI cam as picture-in-picture next to your main camera, or switch to the DJI scene via the chat command !scene dji.

Troubleshooting

Camera stuck at "setting up Wi-Fi" and won't connect? This is the most common issue — usually a band mismatch (2.4 vs. 5 GHz). The camera and the iPhone hotspot must be on the same Wi-Fi band:

  • On the iPhone, the "Maximize Compatibility" toggle sets the band: ON = 2.4 GHz, OFF = 5 GHz (Settings → Personal Hotspot).
  • On the camera, set the band under System Settings → Wireless Connection → Wi-Fi Frequency (2.4 GHz / 5.8 GHz / Automatic).
  • Both must match. If the camera is on 5 GHz but the hotspot (via "Maximize Compatibility ON") is on 2.4 GHz, they'll never find each other.

Most reliable over an iPhone hotspot: both fixed to 2.4 GHz (camera → 2.4 GHz, iPhone → "Maximize Compatibility" ON). Bandwidth is plenty for 60 fps. 5 GHz also works — then turn "Maximize Compatibility" OFF and set the camera to 5.8 GHz. Also helps: an iPhone name without special characters/emoji (that's the SSID), SSID/password entered exactly in Moblin, keep the hotspot screen open, and update the OA4 firmware (v01.02.07.10+ improved Wi-Fi stability).

Camera connects, but no picture in Moblin? Check whether the RTMP server in Moblin is really set to Enabled. A green dot must be visible next to the stream name.

Stuttering or freezes? Increase the latency in Moblin to 6000 ms. DJI cameras sometimes send unevenly when the iPhone hotspot fluctuates.

Camera drops out every few minutes? The iPhone turns off the hotspot when no device is actively connected. Briefly connect a power source while streaming — that keeps the hotspot awake.
