"I have 4 bars of signal, why does my stream stutter?" Every IRL streamer knows this question. The answer is sobering: bars have nothing to do with stream quality. Here we explain what actually matters — and how to react in real time.

The 5 most common causes

1. Building attenuation

When you walk through glass doors or concrete walls, your phone needs 10–20 seconds to hand off to indoor cells. During that time your upstream drops drastically.

Fix: On indoor transitions, enable privacy mode for 20 seconds (!privacy in chat) and switch back once you're outside.

2. Overheating

Phone or action cam gets warm → the baseband chip throttles → bitrate falls. A classic summer problem.

Fix:

  • Put the phone in the shade
  • Dim or turn off the display
  • Step into an air-conditioned room briefly
  • Use an active phone cooler (e.g. Black Shark Magnetic Cooler)

3. Cell congestion

In busy city centers, festivals or train stations, cell towers are overloaded. You have signal, but too little bandwidth — everyone is sharing the channel.

Fix:

  • If multi-SIM: actively switch to the less loaded carrier (e.g. O2 + Vodafone together)
  • Moving 5–20 meters can put you on a different sector of the same cell
  • Lower the bitrate preemptively (FizzyPeak Dashboard → Stream Settings → Target Bitrate -30%)

4. Handover failures

When you're moving (car, bike, train), your phone constantly switches cells. Not all carriers do this cleanly — some briefly lose the connection.

Fix:

  • Only force 4G if 5G is unstable in your region (phone settings → Mobile network → Network mode)
  • Use bonding with 2 different carriers — if one stumbles on a handover, the other catches it

5. Physical shielding

Tunnels, bridges, dense high-rise canyons and underpasses are dead zones. The signal gets reflected or absorbed.

Fix: Mark critical zones on the map in advance and enable !privacy before entering them.

Preparation: test your upload

Test your upload speeds before the stream with:

  • Speedtest.net{target="_blank"} (server of your choice)
  • Fast.com{target="_blank"} (simple, Netflix CDN)
  • nPerf{target="_blank"} (shows a latency and jitter graph)

Upload needs per resolution

Plan for a 50% buffer. If your speedtest shows 5 Mbps, stream at 3 Mbps max.

Multi-modem tricks

Enable adaptive bitrate — FizzyPeak adjusts your bitrate live to the current network quality. You'll find it in the encoder settings (Belabox, Moblin, IRL Pro).

Manually disable weak SIMs — if one SIM drops constantly, turn it off. One stable connection beats two shaky ones.

Set prioritization — main carrier with a higher cap, backup SIM to fill in. In Belabox under Network → Weights.

Band lock for advanced users

On Android (root or engineering menu) you can lock to fixed frequency bands:

  • B20 (800 MHz) — long range, good in rural areas
  • B3 (1800 MHz) — standard, usually balanced
  • B7 (2600 MHz) — high capacity, urban only

With the "Cellular-Z" app (Android) you can see which band you're currently on.

Before the stream: the 3-minute checklist

  1. Speedtest at 3+ Mbps upload
  2. Battery > 80% (prevents throttling)
  3. Temperature "normal" (phone cool in your hand)
  4. !b in the test chat → RTT < 200 ms, bitrate stable
  5. No background apps pulling bandwidth (cloud backup, updates)
