9:16 vertical & mixed-format streaming (TikTok + 16:9 at once)
Set up 9:16 vertical for TikTok and send 16:9 to Twitch/YouTube/Kick in parallel — mixed format from a single encoder. IRL Pro+ only.
In this guide
9:16 vertical & mixed-format streaming
With IRL Pro+ you can send both portrait (9:16, e.g. for TikTok) and landscape (16:9, e.g. Twitch/YouTube/Kick) at the same time from a single encoder upstream. We call this mixed format: you push to FizzyPeak just once, and our cloud produces the matching format per target.
Plan requirement: 9:16 vertical and mixed format are available only in IRL Pro+ (€37/month, €30/month yearly). Starter, Creator and IRL Pro can only do 16:9. If you pick 9:16 anyway, both the dashboard and the backend block it (error "9:16 only with IRL Pro+").
How mixed format works
Your encoder (Belabox/OBS/Moblin) sends once in 16:9 to FizzyPeak. In the distributor (relay) the following happens per target:
- 16:9 targets get the stream passed through unchanged.
- 9:16 targets get the same stream recomposed onto a 1080×1920 canvas (portrait).
Both run in a single encoder process — you save yourself a second upstream, second hardware and double encoding.
Step 1 — add TikTok as a custom RTMP target
TikTok is not (yet) a 1-click preset in FizzyPeak — the ready-made multistream presets are currently Twitch, YouTube, Kick, Facebook, Trovo and Rumble. So for TikTok you add the target manually as custom RTMP. You need a TikTok RTMP URL and a stream key, which you get via TikTok Live Studio or livecenter.tiktok.com (TikTok only unlocks live RTMP access for eligible accounts).
- Sidebar: Distribution → Multistream
- Add a new target → choose Custom RTMP
- Enter the RTMP URL and stream key from TikTok Live Studio (give the target a name like "TikTok")
- Save
TikTok note: TikTok offers no OAuth login at FizzyPeak — you enter the RTMP URL and stream key manually. A TikTok chat merge is therefore not available (chat connection exists only for Twitch, Kick and YouTube). Ingest to FizzyPeak stays the same: ingest.fizzypeak.stream (SRT :9999, SRTLA :5000 or RTMP /live), stream id always publish:live/<YOUR-KEY>.
Step 2 — mark a target as 9:16 (Multistream)
Every multistream target has a format switch. This is how you decide which target is served in portrait:
- In Distribution → Multistream, open your TikTok custom RTMP target via the edit pencil
- In the form, at the Format field, choose:
- 16:9 (horizontal) — default - 9:16 (vertical, TikTok) — portrait
- Save
In the target list, a portrait target shows the note · 9:16 after its name.
You can mix targets: e.g. set your TikTok custom RTMP target to 9:16 and leave Twitch/YouTube/Kick on 16:9 — both are served in parallel from the same stream.
Step 3 — define the 9:16 layout (Cloud Studio)
So your 16:9 picture fits sensibly into portrait, you define which crop ends up in the 9:16 stream. This happens in Cloud Studio (also IRL Pro+):
- In the Cloud Studio settings, go to the Vertical Mode (9:16) section
- Click "Edit 9:16 layout"
- In the editor you drag boxes over your live 16:9 picture. Each box is stacked in the 9:16 stream.
- Quick templates at the top:
- Cam + game — cam strip on top, main picture below (the classic TikTok layout) - Center crop — centered crop - + Area — add another box
- Save with "Save layout"
The white divider between areas can be dragged to change the split. The preview shows your 16:9 source on the left and the finished 9:16 result on the right.
Optional — the entire session in portrait
In the same Vertical Mode (9:16) section there's a switch that composes the entire Cloud OBS session in portrait (1080×1920) — instead of only converting individual targets to 9:16.
- Enable the switch → the next Cloud OBS session starts in portrait.
- Important: the change takes effect only on the next start of the Cloud OBS session, not mid-stream.
Cloud Studio required: the layout editor and the vertical-mode switch belong to Cloud OBS Studio (IRL Pro+). Without Cloud OBS enabled, you'll get an error here.
What to watch out for
- Pick the format first, then check the layout: without a matching 9:16 layout, your 16:9 picture is stacked into portrait in the default split — check the preview in the editor.
- The 9:16 switch takes effect with a delay: the "Vertical Mode" toggle only applies on the next session start.
- TikTok is a custom RTMP target, not a preset: you need the RTMP URL + stream key from TikTok Live Studio. A 1-click TikTok preset isn't available yet (coming soon).
- Instagram is not supported. For portrait, TikTok (as a custom RTMP target) is the typical target; 1-click presets are Twitch, YouTube, Kick, Facebook, Trovo and Rumble, plus any custom RTMP targets.
Frequently asked questions
Can I test 9:16 on cheaper plans? No. The 9:16 entry is locked in Starter, Creator and IRL Pro — both in the dashboard and server-side. 9:16 and mixed format are exclusive to IRL Pro+.
Do I need a second encoder or second hardware for portrait? No. That's exactly the advantage: 16:9 and 9:16 come out of one upstream in a single encoder process.
How do I send to TikTok if there's no preset? You add TikTok as a custom RTMP target and enter the RTMP URL + stream key from TikTok Live Studio (livecenter.tiktok.com). Then you set this target to 9:16.
Where do I change which crop shows in portrait? In Cloud Studio under Vertical Mode (9:16) → "Edit 9:16 layout".
